Medical Assistant Certificate

The Medical Assistant program at SBI-Melville is designed to prepare students to assist medical providers by performing administrative duties and basic clinical duties in an office and/or medical center. The core curriculum covers a variety of subjects, including medical practice, medical law and ethics, medical communications, medical records, insurance, patient preparation, and basic laboratory procedures and tests. The courses are grouped around knowledge and skills required for administrative and clinical medical assisting; however, courses are not necessarily offered in the sequences in which they appear in the catalog. Also, students will typically, but not always, be taught by more than one instructor during their program of study. Students are required to complete a supervised clinical externship at a medical facility that includes competencies, logs and evaluations completed by the student. At the completion of the program, graduates who have diligently attended class and their externship, studied, and practiced their skills should have the necessary skills to seek entry-level employment as medical assistants.

Accreditation

The Medical Assistant program at SBI Campus - an affiliate of Sanford-Brown is not programmatically accredited.

Accreditation is a voluntary process which may be undertaken by schools to demonstrate compliance with specific standards designed to indicate a level of education quality. Each campus has been approved by its respective Institutional Accreditor to offer all of its currently available programs.

Broadly, across our Sanford-Brown campuses, over 60 programs are currently programmatically accredited. Some accrediting agencies require that a new program graduate its first class before the program is eligible for programmatic accreditation but we strive to run our programs according to the standards of our relevant programmatic accreditors and are committed to seeking programmatic accreditation for our eligible programs. This includes not starting the first class until the clinical site requirement is formally demonstrated, not over seating classes, ensuring the self-study process is part of the educational plan and making certain that the curriculum, facility, equipment, staff and leadership meet the programmatic accreditation requirements.

RATE CALCULATION 

The scope of ACICS recognition by the Secretary of Education is defined as accreditation of private postsecondary institutions offering certificates or diplomas, and postsecondary institutions offering associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees in programs designed to educate students for professional, technical, or occupational careers, including those that offer those programs via distance education.

A "graduate" is (all of the following):

  • Achieved a GPA of 2.0 or greater at graduation.
  • Successfully passed all courses in the program or substitute courses permitted by the institution.
  • Attained required competencies or speed levels in all courses.
  • Met all clinical, internship, and externship requirements.
  • Satisfied all other academic requirements for graduation.
  • Satisfied all non-academic requirements for graduation, such as payment of tuition and fees, return of books, etc.
  • Received the appropriate credential.
  • Ceased enrollment in the program at the campus, unless currently enrolled or reenrolled as a new start in a different program.

A "completer" is a student who is no longer enrolled in the institution and who has either completed the time allowed or attempted the maximum allowable number of credits for the program of study but did not accomplish one of the following graduation requirements:

  • Achieve a GPA of at least 2.0.
  • Attain required competencies or speed skills.
  • Satisfy non-academic requirements (e.g., outstanding financial obligations).

"Not Available for Placement" includes graduates and completers who are unavailable to seek employment due to one of the following reasons: pregnancy; death; health-related situations of the graduate or completer, or a direct family member that requires care; continuing education; military service; ineligible for employment in the United States because of visa restrictions; and completers and graduates of a stand-alone English as a Second Language program.

Rate Calculation

Number of employed graduates/completers as defined below, divided by the number of eligible graduates/completers (total graduates minus the excluded graduates/completers noted below).

The Special New York Employment Rate calculation excludes graduates/completers in the following categories: (1) pregnant or has a medical condition or disability that results in the completer’s inability to work or the completer has a parent, child or spouse who has a medical condition that requires the care of the graduate; (2) engaged in full-time active military duty; (3) enrolled in an additional program of post-secondary education; (4) deceased; (5) not eligible for placement in the United States because of visa restrictions; (6) graduate of a stand-alone English as a Second Language program; or (7) spouse or dependent of military personnel who have moved due to military transfer orders.

In calculating the Special New York Employment Rate, Sanford-Brown counts graduates/completers as "employed" if they obtained either a full-time position or a part-time position of at least 20 hours per week and:

  • their position was included on the list of job titles Sanford-Brown publishes for which the program prepares them;
  • their position requires the use of skills learned in the their program as a predominant component of the job; or
  • they continued their employment in the same position they held prior to most recently enrolling in the program, if they attest in writing that the training they received enabled them to maintain or advance in their position.

Graduation Rate

A first-time student has no prior postsecondary experience before enrolling at this campus. This means that a student who attended another college, university or other postsecondary school before enrolling at this school is not included in the calculation. The rate also does not include students initially enrolled part-time, taking individual classes (as compared to enrolling in a full program), or only auditing classes. These rates are calculated using the Student Right-to-Know formula in order to comply with U.S. Department of Education requirements. The statistics track all first-time, full-time and certificate or degree-seeking undergraduate students who began school during the date range and have completed within 150% of the normal program length. For example, for a two-year program, the graduation rate would include students who had completed within three years of beginning the program. This statistic is not specific to one program alone; rather, all applicable undergraduate programs are included in this overall rate.
