SBI Campus in Melville, New York recently partnered with The Icla da Silva Foundation to enlist potential bone marrow donors. The Icla da Silva Foundation is the largest recruitment center in the United States for the Be The Match Registry, a national database of individuals willing to donate bone marrow. It recruits over 38,000 new potential donors annually.
The Icla da Silva Foundation was established in 1992 in memory of Icla da Silva, a 13-year-old Brazilian girl fighting leukemia. Icla had traveled to New York seeking a bone marrow transplant but passed away before a suitable donor could be located.
Following an information session with foundation representatives, more than one hundred MA students volunteered for the registry by completing an application and providing cheek cell swabs.
